Maintaining awareness of things going on around you is crucial to avoiding a violent confrontation. When your at the fuel pump, ATM, restaurant, and even in your home. When I pull up to a gas pump, I look around and take "inventory" of those around me. I take notice if anyone is standing around outside the building just hanging out. I put my back to my truck so I can see anyone approaching. When using an ATM, I find one inside a store and avoid using outside ATM's. When at a restaurant I always find a seat so I can see all exits and see everyone in the restaurant. While at home I try to listen for and watch any for people approaching my home. I then take it a step farther by visualizing a plan on "what to do when." It is easier to follow a plan than to make one up as you go. Be prepared and aware it may save your life.
So you have purchased a handgun for self defense. Now its time to take a Concealed Pistol License Class. Practical Gun Defense offers the training required by Michigan Law to obtain your CPL. The class consists of 5 hours of classroom training and 3 hours of range time. There is a 25 question test and a shooting qualification which requires 10 consecutive shots inside a 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper from 21 feet away. Eye and ear protection are a must and 100 rounds of ammunition is recommended. We offer classes in Marquette, Houghton, Baraga and Ontonagon counties monthly.
Sometimes when those of us choosing concealed carry are staying at a hotel, you need to store your pistol when going to the pool or having a few beers with friends etc... Out of town youth sports presents a few challenges. Often your child is hanging out with other kids, which makes it absolutely necessary that your pistol is secured. The last thing you want is to allow access to a pistol when your child is hanging with their friends in your room. One option I use is of course the portable gun safe (lockable metal TSA approved box) that can be secured with a cable to something solid in the room or around the seat base in your vehicle. The other option is if your hotel has its own in-room safe. Whatever method you use just make sure that you prevent any unauthorized person from gaining access to your firearms.
Last night while traveling to Minneapolis I passed a scene of eleven police cars on highway 29 near Abbotsford Wisconsin. I learned this morning that I was minutes behind an officer involved shooting. When I arrived in Abbotsford I checked into a hotel for the night. I learned this morning that a different hotel had been surrounded by police and another individual was taken into custody in an unrelated incident. My thoughts after the seeing this craziness is "you just never know." I choose to be prepared by training regularly with my handgun and having my concealed pistol license. I am armed while traveling and I make a point of being aware of my surroundings.
